How do I change address with HMRC?

The process of how to notify a change of address depends on how your taxes are filed. If you are notifying a change of address for business tax or only pay tax through Self-Assessment, you'll have to update your details differently.
Otherwise, you can notify HMRC of your new address by heading to their website. You'll need to sign in using your Government Gateway user ID and password to change your address. If you do not have a Government Gateway user ID, you'll need to create one. You'll need:

  • Your full name
  • Your email address
  • A recent payslip or P60 or a valid UK passport
  • Your National Insurance number or a UK address

When do I need to change my address with HMRC?

You'll need to inform HMRC of your new address when you have moved. We recommend taking out a Royal Mail redirection service to ensure that any HMRC correspondence doesn't end up in the wrong hands.

Will my employer notify HMRC of my new address?

You are responsible for informing the HMRC of your new address; your employer may not directly communicate your change of address to HMRC. When you tell your employer of your new address, it tends to be for their internal system; for example, you may get your payslips sent in the post. Most employers will advise you to contact HMRC and notify a change in personal details personally.

When do I tell HMRC about a change to my personal details?

You will need to inform HMRC when:

  • Your income changes
  • Relationship or family changes
  • You change your name
  • You change your gender

It is also best practice to check that all the details HMRC have on their system are up to date, such as your phone number and email address.

Can I get fined for not updating my address with HMRC?

HMRC will not directly fine you for not updating your address, but you could get a fine due to missing mail from HMRC. The best option is to set up a Royal Mail redirection, notify HMRC when you've moved, or do both.
You may get a fine if your return or other documents related to tax were inaccurate and tax has been:
